On one of our first projects as Buildings Evolved, we were engaged by the National Roads and Motorists Association to deliver a smart building carbon reporting system covering scope 1 and scope 2 emissions sources. The data provided was used for corporate sustainability reporting, NGERS and other reporting schemes.
Location: Australia
Industry: Motoring Services
Project Funding: $200k

Scope
Build Asset Register
To determine the scope of smart building carbon reporting system, the first exercise was to build an asset register of all the NRMA sites across the country. The NRMA property portfolio covers:
- NRMA Corporate
- MotorServe
- Holiday parks
- Thrifty Car Rental
- Orix Car Rental
- Travelodge Hotels
NRMA has operational control over these businesses, and is over the NGERs reporting threshold. NRMA Insurance is a separate business division to NRMA Services and is not covered in the scope of reporting.

Extract, Transform & Load Billing Data
Working with Professional Utilities Board (later acquired by Kinect Energy Group) - NRMA’s appointed energy procurement consultant, 7 years of invoice data for electricity, water, gas, diesel, petrol and other scope 1 & 2 emissions sources. From this, quantities were extracted along with price into a cloud database. Emissions factors published by the Australian Government for the relevant years were loaded into the software in order to calculate NGERs compliant carbon reporting.
Creating a baseline year from imported utility consumption data
Daily NEM12 Data Feed
Working with Ausgrid TCA (now PlusES), NRMA’s Meter Data Provider (MDP), a daily NEM12 data feed was established using FTP to the cloud carbon reporting system. Coupled with tariff information, the data was then used to analyse daily electrical load profiles to both find and monitor the effectiveness of implementing Energy Efficiency Opportunities.
“Tapping” into a NEM12 data feed - the same data the retailer receives.
Connect Assets to Cloud
At a range of sites, metering and sub-metering equipment was installed to augment the invoice billing data and NEM12 utility interval data so that a greater degree of understanding about carbon intensity could be analysed.
The cloud platform was from Switch Automation, with sub-meters supplied by NHP.
Current Transformers installed on circuits at North Strathfield MSB.
Carbon Reporting
Various carbon reports were prepared for NRMA corporate sustainability team covering scope 1 & scope 2 emissions for the portfolio.
